Asanka represented Sri Lanka from 1984 to 1996. Played 41 test matches and 147 one day Internationals. Only Sri Lankan player to score a test hundred at MCG Boxing Day test. Was a major contributor in Sri Lanka winning the 1996 Cricket World Cup. Worked for Sri Lanka Cricket from 2017 to August 2019 as the Cricket manager, selector and later on as the Director of Cricket & High Performance. worked as the Director High Performance and Head coach at Nigeria Cricket from November 2020 to May 2022. currently the Head coach of Essendon Cricket club in Melbourne ( premier club in Victoria).
