Josh Beaver, 29 from Tooradin, is a former elite athlete in the sport of swimming. After 5 consecutive years on the Australian Dolphin Swimming Team, Josh competed at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth games where he won bronze to cap off his career. After transitioning, he took up an opportunity to work with Swimming Australia before accepting a role with the Australian Institute of Sport working in Athlete Wellebing and Engagement. He now is back in the swimming world working with supporting junior athletes as Head Coach of Mentone Aquatic and Bayside Swimming Club.

Career Highlights:

After narrowly missing the 2012 London Olympic team by .2 of a second, Josh was forced to spectate the sport for 8 months, through unfortunate injury and illness. Two years on in April 2014, found himself a selected member of the Australian Swim Team which competed at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Having qualified in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, Josh went on to have the meet of his life, claiming silver in the 200m Backstroke, bronze in the 100m Backstroke and silver as a member of the 4x100 medley relay, along with 8 personal best times.

To cap off this breakout season for Josh, he finished with a world ranking of 8th in the 200 Backstroke. Following on in 2015, Josh went on to compete for Australia at the 2015 FINA World Swimming championships, to claim 9th in what was seen as a stepping stone through to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. 

Josh qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games at the national trials in March of 2016 going on to swim the 100 and 200 Backstroke. Josh swam a personal best time in the 100 Backstroke and equally as impressive in the 200 Backstroke, where he finished his Olympic campaign with two 10th place finishes. 

He ranks as the 3rd fastest all time in both the 100 and 200 Backstroke in Australia and notably came 2nd to Mitch Larkin 5 consecutive years in a row.

Public Speaking Experience

Josh has great public speaking capacity, having shared his story with many communities over time. He frequents at schools, local community events and large scale corporate events including business functions, where he gives insight in growing up in the sport, obstacles he faced throughout his career, uses the analogy of sport creating tools for your to carry through life and life away from the pool. Having now made the transition, he shares stories in transitioning and coping mechanisms that has enabled him to enjoy retirement. He is extremely passionate about sport and the power of giving back.
