SHORT BIO

The last 2 years have been defining for Sam Bailey showing his strengths of resilience and determination as his guiding light.  Diagnosed with a medical condition. Learning to administer his own injectable medication. The many adverse medication side effects.  Dealing with day-to-day pressures of high school. Airlifted to the hospital for a motorbike injury. Making vast lifestyle changes in diet and wellbeing.  Above all trying to be a teen that can “be normal”. After all this, the darkest days have seen him strive for excellence in the sport of Motocross and he has been gaining momentum the entire time.

MY STORY

At 16, Sam Bailey thrust himself into one of the toughest sports on the planet in the scene of Junior Motocross where he rides in the local area of Toowoomba, Queensland.  Rising through the ranks from no experience in competitive MX, he has certainly been making his mark with the local community. Nowadays Sam has travelled to various tracks throughout Queensland, New South Wales and USA gaining as much skill to make him as diversified as possible.

At the age of 5, he started in a paddock riding around with his Honda CRF50, gifted from his Grandparents, which forged his passion for riding.  He and that bike were inseparable.

Since this time his eyes are set fixated on the motocross scene where he lives and breathes to aspire to one day becoming Pro.  He even has been dabbling into Supercross where he has quickly gained extra skills ready for the next racing campaign.

In 2016, he started at the Toowoomba MX Club which is home to the world-renowned raceway ‘Echo Valley’ is now his hunting ground to battle it out with the boys.  Thanks to various professional riders, coaches and mechanic support including Jaydon Robinson #27, Luke Reardon #110, Jed Parsons Motorsport, Motodevelopment’s Chis Urquhart & Shane Booth he has been able to perfect some of his techniques but there is still so much more to learn.

Life has not always been kind as during this time his health had taken a nosedive whereby since the age of 12 strange health mishaps kept occurring where Doctors could not explain what was wrong.  Then he got incredibly sick and finally found out 3 years later on 14th December 2016, a day that changed his life forevermore, he was finally diagnosed, he has Crohns Disease. Throughout this time this has not been easy for this enthusiastic teen who even through the height of illness had lost more than 8 kgs (he only weighed 50 to start with).  Crohn’s can throw many different faces at you which includes dealing with bone marrow suppression, having several blood transfusions, weekly blood tests… the mental drain for him had been incredible.

Crohn’s disease is regarded as an inflammatory bowel disease.  It not only affects the bowel but anywhere from your mouth or stomach as well.  Intense inflammation which is highly painful due to your immune system attacking its own self literally your body is fighting itself.  The only way to help control it is through medication which are at the same level as what Doctors prescribe to cancer patients. Humira and Methotrexate are the most recent drug he is taking to help control his condition.

Through this journey, he has learned to look after himself by making lifestyle choices for better overall wellbeing and has learned a lot about diet, fitness and mental health.  He even has a new secret weapon against arm pump!

“Everyday there is a constant reminder of Crohn’s but my will to ride is stronger.  Nothing is going to stop me. I come back stronger every time”  Sam Bailey #152
