Nathan Power is a current co-caption of the Australian Men’s Water Polo team and is in preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics. During his career Nathan has chased his athletic ambitions across the globe while also pursuing academic excellence and professional success away from the pool.
Nathan’s introduction to water polo came in the backyard pool, throwing the ball around with his mother who had been an Australian Country representative. It was when she passed away that Nathan first tried his hand at competitive club water polo, at the age of 13.
As representative water polo is a primarily big city-based sport, Nathan’s high school years were spent travelling from his hometown of Newcastle to Sydney multiple times a week while attending school in Newcastle. The effort materialised into success when a 20-year-old Power received his first senior national team selection in 2013.
From 2013 to June 2016 Nathan based himself in Sydney and was the only player selected for every match and was selected to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Unfortunately, he was cruelled by injury less than two weeks before the games, forcing him to withdraw from the team and fly home.
Nathan then set his sights on playing water polo professionally in Europe. Across 5 years Nathan played in Croatia and Spain, making it to the grand final on multiple occasions along with playing in the European Champions League which is the pinnacle of club water polo. The culmination of this 5-year period was competing at the Tokyo Olympics.
Throughout Nathan’s career he has been determined to ensure he was achieving success out of the pool also. While playing overseas he continued academic pursuits and completed a Bachelors of Economics and Masters of Commerce from the University of New South Wales.
Nathan now resides in Sydney, where he juggles competing for the UNSW Wests Magpies Water Polo team and working for KMPG as a senior consultant, all while still representing Australia at the highest level in his sport.
