Kurtis Marschall is the bold new star of Australian athletics. Marschall won a gold medal in the Men’s pole vault at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. In a dramatic final, he sent the 35,000-strong parochial home crowd into raptures when he made a third-attempt clearance at 5.70m to edge out 2015 World Champion, Canada’s Shawnacy Barber.
Marschall went into the Games’ in form following an impressive 4th place finish at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham. It was billed as the strongest field ever to contest a World Indoor final and Marschall showed composure beyond his years to equal his personal-best mark at 5.80m, which would have been good enough to medal at the last eight iterations of the event.
Marschall has relocated to Perth from his hometown of Adelaide to train at the West Australian Institute of Sport. He’s had an injury-disrupted season however preparations are well on track for Marschall to be ready to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. He is considered a genuine medal prospect.
