Andy Otten is an athletic, tall defender who has the capacity to play as key or rebound player. He was recruited in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft and debuted for the Adelaide Crows in 2009 where his outstanding year earned him the runner-up honour in the AFL Rising Star vote. Furthermore, Andy was also awarded the club’s 2009 Emerging Talent Award. However, after significantly injuring his ACL, he was sidelined for the entire 2010 season. Otten returned for the 2011 season and successfully played through until the late stages of the 2012 season until he was again struck-down by another knee injury.
Andy returned in 2013 to his career-best form, finishing the season with 15 goals, the Coach’s Award and a top-five finish in the club’s best and fairest.
Unfortunately, he continued to be affected by ongoing knee difficulties, sidelining him for large parts of the 2014 and 2015 season. Otten played in the SANFL during the 2016 season as he hoped to find his way back into the senior side. Andy endured a 960-day period between senior games for the club.
Otten’s 2017 season saw him return to the senior side, playing 19 games and kicking 20 goals. He played instrumental parts in the side’s backline and occasionally in the forward half of the ground. Furthermore, Otten earned his spot in the Crows 2017 AFL Grand Final team, unfortunately failing to win on the day.
Andy played only 8 games in 2018 but reached the 100 game milestone. 2019 did not provide more chances, declining to 3; deciding to retire at the end of the season.
Andy has developed a Resilience Program that he uses as a Keynote Presentation for athletes and school children of all ages.
Andy retired from AFL at the end of 2019, to join a role as Development Coach at the Hawthorn Football Club, where he will also be played for their VFL affiliate, the Box Hill Hawks
