Speed, elusiveness and accuracy are key ingredients for any shooter and Natalie Medhurst has all of this in abundance. The former Australian Diamonds sharp shooter continues to provide match winning performances under extreme pressure to make her one of the world’s best goal attacks.

At 20 years of age Natalie joined the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy series which transformed into the ANZ Championships in 2008. In 2010 she joined the Queensland Firebirds and it was here that her trade mark speed and elusiveness played a key role in the Firebirds winning their first ANZ Championship title in 2011. On the back of a successful and consistent season with the QLD Firebirds, Nat was awarded with the League’s MVP. Although missing the finals in 2012, Nat had another stand out season taking out the QLD Firebirds MVP.

In 2014 Nat made the move west to join her Australian shooting partner Caitlin Bassett at West Coast Fever, where she was named captain.

Natalie Medhurst’s 2007 debut year for Australia was a true reflection of her as an athlete – accurate, competitive and excellent skill execution under pressure. In her debut game against Jamaica she shot at 100% against some the world’s best and tallest defenders. Following that series she played an integral role in Australia’s World Championship winning campaign over their arch rivals, the New Zealand Silver Ferns. Having finished the preliminary rounds as the tournament’s third most accurate shooter, she found herself replacing senior shooter Catherine Cox in the final quarter of the grand final. Showing her mental toughness she converted all her shots to help Australia win back the world title.

A heart breaking double over time loss in the 2010 Commonwealth Games spurred the Diamonds and Natalie on in 2011 at the World Championship held in Singapore. Having shot at 93% in the semi final against Jamaica, Nat showed her defensive skills when she made the intercept to take the game into overtime. She finished on court shooting 19 goals in the nail biting one goal win over New Zealand and was awarded MVP for the Final against the Silver Ferns, making 2011 a standout year in her career.

After a successful career with West Coast Fever, Nat joined Collingwood Magpies in the Super Netball league from 2019.

Nat announced her retirement from the game on 9 September 2020. An illustrious career earning 86 Test caps, winning three World Cup titles and a Commonwealth Games gold and silver medal, and is the third most-capped national league player, with 235 matches and 4,415 goals.

in 2023, after the birth of two children and 1,351days, Nat made her return to professional netball when she took to the court with the West Coast Fever.

Nat now works in professional female cricket as the Player Development Manager in W.A where she supports athletes in both their on-field and off-field development. nat also commentates for FOX netball during both the domestic and international seasons.

Natalie was a fantastic speaker, fielding questions (and lots of them) from our club’s players. She was on time, friendly, very open and spoke in a way that young children could understand. Thank you to PickStar for organising.
