Matthew Lobbe was drafted by the Port Adelaide Football Club with their first round selection in the 2007 National Draft. The 200cm ruck took a few years to develop into the role, but was a key player in the 2013 and 2014 campaigns where Port went deep into the finals. Heralded as the “most diligent trainer” at the Power and a role model to his younger teammates, Lobbe’s leadership qualities saw him elevated to joint vice-captain in 2015. The 28-year-old was awarded the Club’s Coaches’ award in 2014.
After notching up 92 games for the Power, Lobbe moved back to Victoria and joined Carlton ahead of the 2018 season. While injuries hampered his first year at the club, Lobbe reached his milestone 100th game in early 2019.
Lobbe has been heralded for his professionalism, approach to the sport and leadership. This was immediately recognised as he was awarded the 2018 Best Clubman and Spirit of Carlton Award, and he will continue to be a mentor as Carlton’s young playing group develops.
Since retiring from the game, Lobbe has moved into coaching. He is currently the Rucks/Head of Development coach with the Port Adelaide Football Club.
