Create an experience with David McKeon

David McKeon is an Australian athlete who is established as an excellent competitor in 200m and 400m freestyle events. Unlike most elite athletes, David did not take up competitive swimming until 2010 at age 18.

Inspired by his sister, Emma McKeon, as well as his rich family bloodline of Olympic talent, David decided to take his interest in swimming to professional in 2010. The McKeon family has seen numerous Olympic entries and success. Father Ron swam in two Olympic games whilst also winning two Commonwealth gold medals. Mother Susie (formerly Woodhouse) competed in the 1982 Commonwealth games whilst David’s Uncle Rob was also an Olympic medallist.

2011 saw David’s international breakthrough where he won gold in the 400m freestyle event at the World University Games in Singapore. In 2012, David continued to impress, winning the 400m freestyle final at the 2012 Energy Australia Swimming Championships and consequently qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics. In his first Olympic appearance, McKeon finished 5thin the 4x200m freestyle relay and 12thin the 400m freestyle.In 2014, McKeon continued to progress as he dominated the Commonwealth Games, taking home gold in the 4x800m freestyle relay and silver in the 400m freestyle. Furthermore, David competed in the 2015 FINA World Championships where his relay 4x800m relay team finished 3rdbehind Great Britain and USA.

The 2016 Rio Olympics was another competitive outing for McKeon as his relay team narrowly came 4thin the 4x800m freestyle relay. David also consolidated on his individual career as he finished 7thin the 400m freestyle final. Furthermore, David’s 2017 form is very promising as he collected silver in the 2017 National Championships for the 400m Freestyle. 

Since retiring David has now moved into a coaching role at Cranbrook School.
