Maša Jovanovic is an Australian tennis player born 23rd of November 1994. She was born in Serbia, Vrbas and moved to Victoria, Melbourne with her parents; leaving all family and relatives behind at the age of 3. Maša speaks fluent Serbian, other wise English is her base language. Jovanovic has a WTA singles career high ranking of 518 achieved on April 4th 2018. She also has a WTA doubles career high ranking of 518 achieved April 16th 2018.
Current Singles Ranking: 780
Maša picked up the racket at the age of 3 and started playing tournaments at the age of 7 after her father realised she had great hand eye-coordination. She was coached by her father and Ian Buckley (former coach of Pat Cash) at a young age. Today she is partly coached by her dad but now teamed up with Duje Kuvacic (former coach/hitting partner of Jelena Dokic) and is part of SETA Academy situated in Beaumaris Tennis Club Melbourne and part time at Melbourne Park (National Academy). It's been a tough journey for Maša as her dad through out her whole career has been coaching her and working full time night shift. Her mum a full time food microbiologist. So it's always been tough with traveling and a financial burden. Every tournament is pressure and will there be enough for food and next tournament ahead. She played through out the months when she can AMT (Australian Money Tournaments) to fund herself for overseas trips, casual coaching and selling her art pieces.
Jovanovic has won two ITF doubles title on the tour (Niš 15k and Antalya 15k). Maša won the Kia Amateur Australian Open in both singles and doubles events in 2013. Maša has also played mixed doubles Australian Open 2015 with her partner Sam Thompson after winning the wildcard playoffs.
Maša got the opportunity in 2018 to play Hobart International qualifications after showing great results in Mildura 25k being the only Australian maiden to make it to the semi-finals. She then got given another opportunity to play in the playoffs for the Australian Open main draw wildcard, where she lost to Destanee Aiava in a tough three setter. Maša was showing promising results through out 2017 and beginning of 2018 until she unfortunately got injured (Herniated Disk) during her trip to Europe in May. She was out on rehab for 5 months missing out on most of the Australian pro tours end of the year leading up to Australian Open.
There was no support from Tennis Australia during her injured period. Even though they say they support all Australian Tennis Athletes..... As they say "if the horse ain't working, it's not making any money".
So Maša took the opportunity to create (paint). Something that she has a big passion for and helps her relax and takes her mind away from hustle and bustle of the tennis life. She has till this day had two successful Art Exhibitions of her own. First was at Collingwood Gallery 2017 (Strong Women) and second just recently at Alliance Française Melbourne in 2018 (Liquid Gold). She still paints and draws in her spare time and creates beautiful commission pieces for clients who request for a personalised art work. This was not enough, so it was the end of a Tennis Career.
Maša currently tennis coaches part time in Melbourne, casually works for AFL Victoria providing programs to Primary Schools in Victoria as a Games Development Officer (GDO) as well as finishing her full time University Bachelors of Physical Education in Sport Science at Victoria University. As her dream is to become a P.E Teacher at schools. Trying to make a difference in this 21st century. Moreover, balancing her happiness and tranquility away from the world with long passion for horses, at Woodlands Trail Rides, Victoria.
She would have pursued horse back riding in the past, but due to the dangers, financials associated with it and risks that came: could have jeopardise her tennis career.
What a hell of a ride this has been! Not for the faint hearted.
