The four-time All-Australian’s absence was sorely felt during 2023, with McGovern ripping his hamstring tendon during the carnage of the round three RAC Derby and not returning until round 17. He finished the year strongly, though, and was one of the standouts during the road victory over the Western Bulldogs with 22 disposals and nine marks. The 2018 premiership star re-signed until the end of 2025 and while he has stepped away from the vice-captaincy, the imposing key defender remains a critical voice among the playing group.
