Growing up just outside of Toowoomba, in the town of Allora, Matthew Denny started out his throwing career at school in year 1, throwing bean bags as shot puts and vortexes as javelins.
In his teen years, Matty built a homemade discus circle at his family’s property. Fast forward to 2013, he won the World Under 18 Youth Championships discus title, placed fourth at the 2014 Under 20 World Junior Championships and won silver at the 2015 Summer Universiade.
In 2015, Matty became the second athlete in the near 100-year-history to win both the discus and hammer titles at the 2016 Nationals. He has represented Australia in the discus at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics where he was the youngest in the field at the age of 20.
In 2022, Matty competed at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where he was able to win first place and bring home a gold medal in the Men's Discus Throw.
His previous personal best in the discus is 67.02 metres set at the Tokyo Olympics, but recently broke his own Australian Record, throwing an enormous 69.35 metres at the Australian Athletics Championships in Adelaide resulting in Automatic selection for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Matt finally realized his dream after reaching the Podium at the 2024 Olympics. Matty won Bronze, cementing himself as one of the greatest Australian Discus Throwers of all time.
