Sophie Taylor is an Australian field hockey defender and physiotherapist who has represented Australia with the Hockeyroos. Known for balancing elite sport with a clinical career in physiotherapy, she is recognised for her resilience, leadership, and advocacy for athlete health and wellbeing.

She developed a passion for sport early, playing multiple sports before specialising in hockey in her teens. Despite significant health challenges in adolescence, including chronic fatigue and glandular fever, she progressed through Victorian and national pathways to earn selection in Australia’s junior national team, winning bronze at the 2016 Junior World Cup.

Taylor made her senior international debut for Australia on her birthday in 2018 and became a regular member of the national program. After being dropped from the Hockeyroos in 2022, she moved to Antwerp, Belgium, to play professionally with Royal Herakles Hockey Club for 2 year.. She returned to Australia in 2024 to play for Hockey Club Melbourne in the Hockey One league. She worked her way back into national selection and, in a remarkable full-circle moment, returned to the side and captained Australia 1,725 days later—an achievement widely cited as a testament to her perseverance and leadership.

Alongside her sporting career, Taylor completed a Bachelor of Health Science and a Master of Physiotherapy at La Trobe University. Her dual perspective as an elite athlete and clinician informs her physiotherapy practice, where she specialises in sports rehabilitation, injury prevention, and performance-focused care.

After returning to Melbourne following her European playing career, she has continued competing in premier-league hockey while working as a physiotherapist. She is also an educator with Sport Integrity Australia, delivering programs that promote safe, fair, and inclusive sport. In addition, she coaches within the development pathway in Victorian hockey, drawing on her extensive coaching experience at Herakles Hockey Club in Belgium.

Beyond competition and clinical work, she is a speaker and mentor who shares her journey of resilience and recovery with young athletes, with particular advocacy for rest, sleep, and holistic performance.

On behalf of Highfields State Secondary College, thanks PickStar and please pass on to Sophie Taylor our greatest appreciation. The whole process bar a couple of our own IT issues that were sorted out were all resolved and all went smoothly. Sophie is a great role model for our students and if we can connect again some day on another project we would look forward to that.

Sophie very kindly contributed to our APS Alumni #Reflections series. Her answers were insightful, engaging and so very valuable for our students to hear during the lockdown they were experiencing in Victoria. As an athlete Sophie has scaled high heights but as she herself says the focus has to be on the journey and the way in which she highlights all the lessons she has learnt is fantastic and I look forward to working with Sophie again in the future and hearing her speak more.

Sophie was a fantastic guest to have on my podcast, I was looking for a guest who was able to open up and engage in conversation and Sophie delivered. Sophie has a fantastic story of struggle overcoming chronic fatigue while trying to make it into the National Hockey Program. Sophie was able to elaborate on what helped her succeed in becoming the athlete she is today and provided details on her progression through the hockey system. These details engaged the listenership and provided them with helpful ways that they can improve themselves whether it be in sport or personal life. I would wholeheartedly recommend Sophie to anyone I know

Sophie Taylor delivered an engaging, thoughtful and highly purposeful keynote address for our National Development Squad environment in 2020. Sophie’s ability to deliver her experiences in a relatable and realistic fashion added impetus to the benefit derived from our entire playing group. Sophie’s genuine curiosity around her own journey, unique storytelling approach and complete vulnerability facilitated an experience that was a pleasure to be on the receiving end of. I’d highly recommend Sophie’s skills in this area to any interested groups and/or individuals.

Sophie came to our junior football club to speak to our coaches and managers about the important role we all play in developing not only great young footballers but also developing great young people! Her philosophies were closely linked to ours; however, she gave us really valuable messages of what is important for our junior footballers and some great tips to help our players continue to strive and develop throughout the season. We were so impressed with how she spoke to us that we invited her back the following week to chat to both our boys and girls teams from Year 3 all the way through to Year 10. Her messages of striving for personal excellence, setting realistic goals and working as a team resonated soundly with our players and gave them an insight into what it takes to be a great team member in any sport! We would recommend Sophie to speak to a range of athletes and cater her talks to the audience.
