Ruan Sims, has been a trailblazer for women in Rugby League from the age of eight when she pulled on a pair of boots, headgear and shoulder pads and played as the only girl in a team in her home town of Gerringong. Born to Fijian-mother Jaqueline and sports-loving father Peter. The Sims Family would have to be the most diversely successful sporting family in the country.
The oldest, Ruan 39, is a dual international, having won World Cups for Australia in rugby sevens (in Dubai in 2009) and rugby league (in England in 2013). Brothers Ashton, 36, Tariq, 31, and Korbin, 29, are seasoned NRL players who represented Fiji at the World Cup in 2013 while sister Canecia (CJ), 32, has been chosen for the Australian national gridiron team that will play in the 2017 IFAF Women’s World Championship of American Football in Austria.
Today, she is a rugby league commentator for the 9 Network and ABC radio, and an ambassador for the NRL in the areas of mental health and domestic violence through the State of Mind and Voice Against Violence. Her service to rugby league has been recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
