Shyla Heal is an Australian basketball star who has become one of the leading female players in the country at only 20 years of age. A professional player since the age of 14, she is currently the star of the Sydney Flames WNBL team.
Shyla was selected into the Australian National Women’s Team, the Opals, in January 2022 and
made her national debut shortly thereafter. She was also named as a ‘Playmaker’ ahead of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, being held in Sydney in September 2022. At just 19 years old, Shyla was drafted into the WNBA by the Chicago Sky, who selected her with the
8th pick in the first round of the 2021 Draft. Shyla joined Lauren Jackson and Liz Cambage as other Australians to have been selected in the first round of a WNBA Draft. In the 2020 WNBL season Shyla was top 5 in scoring in the league while being awarded the Youth Player of the Year Award and named to the All WNBL Second Team.
Her dream is to represent Australia at the Olympics and World Cup and she lives by a personal creed of ‘Work Hard, Stand Tall, Dream Big’, something she lives by as she works towards achieving her dreams. Shyla is a star of Australian basketball and up-and-coming star of Australian sport more broadly, who aspires to live her life as a role model for young Australians. In a sport usually dominated by tall players, Shyla’s passion, determination and work ethic ensures she is succeeding against much bigger opposition.
Outside of sport, Shyla has a passion for fashion, and is co-founder of the fashion label “She Got Swish”, a streetwear brand that is growing in popularity. This entrepreneurship has also enabled her to learn about key areas of small business including e-commerce, sourcing, design and the financials that go behind key business decisions. While Shyla Heal has already achieved so much at such a young age, she knows there are major goals still to achieve – representing Australia at the Olympics and playing in the WNBA once more – being at the top of her list.
She hopes that by others also following her creed – Work Hard, Stand Tall, Dream Big – that they can go through life with self confidence and self-belief, knowing that they can achieve what they set out to do so long as they are willing to put in the work and not believe the naysayers around them.
