Mary Fowler is on track to become the world’s best player in women’s football. The 17-year-old is a near-certain selection for Australia’s U/23 football side to contest the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021, having been part of the Matilda’s team that travelled to France for the 2019 FIFA World Cup. Mary made her international debut at 15 having been plucked from Sydney’s second-tier competition, and she’s since earned four caps for the national team.
Her selection for the Matildas came as no surprise to anyone who watched Fowler play at the 2019 AFC Women’s Championship. Mary scored Australia’s two goals for the Young Matildas in their 3-2 loss to Thailand in the Final, with Mary bagging 10 goals across the tournament to win the Golden Boot.
Mary is one part of the ‘Fowler-Five’; a family of prodigiously talented footballers - older brother Quivi, sister Ciara, Mary, Louise, and Seamus. Growing up in Cairns, the family would compete in their own Olympic-style competitions each night with homemade podiums, medals and prizes. The road to stardom has been tough for the Fowlers. The family car became known as ‘Hotel Tarago’ due to the frequency with which all seven family members stayed inside the people mover.
Mary Fowler joined Montpellier mid-season, one of the powerhouse clubs of global women’s football.
