Ben Pengelley was South Australia's best-performing player in the Under-19 National Championships in 2016-17 and was rewarded with selection in the Australia Under-19 team. Pengelley was rookie-contracted by the Redbacks in 2017-18. Pengelley lived in Whyalla while playing cricket for Adelaide Cricket Club which is approximately 400km. His parents would travel with him completing a round trip twice a week for training on Wednesday nights and games on Saturday for the full season.
