One of the AFL’s most recognisable faces, Mark McVeigh became a fixture of Windy Hill thanks to over a decade of dedicated service. Drafted from NSW by the Bombers with selection nine in the 1998 AFL Draft. He impressed in his debut season, playing nine games in a team where competition for places was tough.
McVeigh continued to emerge in the ensuing seasons, playing in Essendon’s Grand Final side in 2001 and claiming third in the AFL Rising Star. He was one of only six Bombers to play every game in 2002 – a feat he repeated in 2003 amongst a sequence of 57 straight matches. McVeigh was a stand out performer for Essendon, with a high disposal & efficiency rate he was one of the club’s main contributors and eventually was to become a part of the Leadership group and a role model to his younger rookies.
After some injury troubles McVeigh retired in 2012, he shared the role of Vice-Captain of the Essendon Football Club with David Hille for most of his career. McVeigh played a total of 232 games and kicked 107 goals during his successful career at Essendon. Since retiring in 2012 McVeigh has been working at AFL NSW/ACT as Talent Manager for the Sydney North region and in October 2013 was appointed Head Coach of the Slater & Gordon GIANTS Academy to develop young talent in the region across Western Sydney, Canberra and New South Wales.
In 2013, following his playing retirement, McVeigh began a media career and has appeared on Fox Sports, Seven Network and SEN 1116.
