Zach Tuohy is one of the AFL’s greatest and most successful Gaelic footballers to adopt the sport. Prior to be drafted by Carlton in the 2010 Rookie Draft. Tuohy was a member of the Portaloise Club in Ireland’s Gaelic football league where he won a Leinster Minor Football Championship.

Tuohy began his career in the 2010, playing in Carlton’s VFL side, the Northern Blues, where his initial roles consisted of being a tagger and rebound defender. After impressive efforts in the VFL side, Tuohy was elevated to the club’s senior list, making his AFL debut in Round 11 against Port Adelaide. From there, Tuohy played 11 further senior games for the season. 2012 saw Tuohy continue his senior consistency as he played 19 games. Through the 2013-2017 seasons, Tuohy failed to miss a game, a remarkable effort. Throughout his time at Carlton, Zach has fulfilled roles in the half-back line as well half-forward line where he has kicked goals with his enormous long-range kick. Furthermore, Zach’s senior form saw him finish in Carlton’s top 10 in the Best and Fairest count in 2013.

2015 proved to be one of Zach’s strongest years as an AFL footballer. He not only came 3rd in Carlton’s Best and Fairest count, he was also selected by the 2015 AFL Coaches Association as a small defender in their All-Australian team. Furthermore, 2016 saw Zach reach 100 AFL games, becoming only the fifth Irish player in the league to have achieved this.

2017 was Tuohy’s greatest season to date. Not only did Geelong have a great finals campaign and season, Tuohy relished his new club and was awarded All-Australian nomination. Despite not being selected in the final team, Tuohy has displayed significant development as an AFL footballer and poses as one of the most damaging defenders in the competition. Touchy also represented Ireland in the International Rules Series against Australia, making it his third appearance for the national side, having previously played in 2011 and 2013. Zach will now look towards the 2018 season where he hopes to help Geelong further their premiership success.

He played his 200th game against Richmond on 11 September 2020, becoming just the second-ever Irish AFL player to reach that milestone. Tuohy played his 250th game in the 2022 Gran Final, also winning his first premiership. He became only the second Irish player to win an AFL premiership.

In October 2022, Tuohy signed a new one-year contract extension with Geelong.
