Australian Paralympic Gold Medallist, Cerebral Palsy Athlete and Advocate. World Record Holder. World No.1 in 100m Freestyle since December 2013 

Ambassador of Cerebral Palsy Education Centre in Victoria. Australian Paralympics Swimmer Number 273. Member of the 2012 Paralympics Team to London, the World Championships in Montreal and the Pan Pacific Championships in Los Angeles in 2014. These are just some of the few achievements of Matthew's career to date. After coming back from Shoulder surgery in late 2014, Matthew now trains at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, competes for Camberwell Grammar Aquatic Club in Melbourne. Along with his personal success, his family sporting history has included his cousin- 2011 Tour de France winner Cadel Evans, his father with international basketball success and his brother who is currently competing on the ATP and ITF Men's Tennis circuit. He was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2014 for services to the community through the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre and through sport as a Paralympics Gold Medallist. Haanappel competed "up a class" at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the S7 50m Freestyle.
