He played for St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) from 1987 to 1998, establishing himself as a talented and influential player known for his agility, skill, and courage. Winmar is perhaps best remembered for his iconic gesture during a match against Collingwood in 1993 when he lifted his jersey and pointed to his skin in response to racist abuse from the crowd, a powerful moment that sparked conversations about racism in Australian sport.
