Born in the remote town of Cloncurry and raised in Emerald in Queensland's central highlands, Baxter's journey is one of determination and self-made success. Leaving school at 15, he took the unconventional path of joining the Army, where he enrolled in its apprenticeship program. This experience laid the groundwork for his future endeavors, as he honed his skills as a technician in electronics, telecoms, and guided weapon systems.
Entrepreneurial Beginnings: In 1994, at the young age of 23, Steve embarked on his entrepreneurial journey, launching his first start-up, SE Net. This pioneering internet service provider, started from his spare room, soon grew to service over 35,000 customers. SE Net's success caught the attention of Ozemail/UUNet, leading to its acquisition under the guidance of its founding Director, who was also a Former Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull.
Building PIPE Networks: Steve's second venture, PIPE Networks, was launched in 2001. This startup, which specialized in telecommunications infrastructure, marked a significant leap in Steve's entrepreneurial career. In 2005, PIPE Networks was sold to the TPG Group for a staggering $373 million, cementing Steve's status as a prominent figure in the Australian tech landscape.
Global Experience and Shark Tank Fame: After his success with PIPE Networks, Steve ventured to California, where he worked with Google. He led a project focused on delivering high-speed telecommunications systems across North America. Steve's expertise in technology and business acumen led him to become a popular Shark on Channel 10’s Shark Tank Australia, where he served for the first four seasons, offering insights, investments, and mentorship to budding entrepreneurs.
Queensland’s Chief Entrepreneur: In 2018, Steve was appointed as ‘Queensland’s Chief Entrepreneur,’ a role highlighting his influence and commitment to fostering entrepreneurial spirit in his home state.
Current Ventures: Currently, Steve is the Co-founder and Executive Chairman of TEN13, Australia's leading tech startup investment platform, demonstrating his continued passion for nurturing tech innovation. He is also the Founder and Lead Investor with Beaten Zone Venture Partners, focusing on early-stage investments in Australian sovereign defence technology. This venture highlights his commitment to not only the tech sector but also to contributing to national defence capabilities.
