Sam Short is an Australian swimmer who has recently competed at the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
Competing in the 400m & 1500m Freestyle at the Games in Birmingham, Sam walked away as a silver medalist in the 400m and a gold medalist in the 1500m freestyle events.
Earlier in 2022, Sam was part of a successful 4x200m freestyle relay team at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest.
The tradition of Australian distance swimming is well-documented. The country pays great respect to all of its champions, but the 1500-meter freestyle has always held special recognition. Plenty of legends have achieved success in the event, from Andrew “Boy” Charlton to Murray Rose to Kieren Perkins and Grant Hackett.
But over the last three Olympiads, Australia has endured a drought in the event. Of the last nine medalists in the 1500 freestyle, none have hailed from Australia. The only other time the nation has gone three Games without a podium finisher in the metric mile was from 1980-1988.
Sam Short wants to recharge the tradition and understand what is ahead for him in his stroke.
Earlier in 2022 at the Australian National Championships, Sam won bronze in the 400m freestyle event, then backing it up two days later with a silver in the 800m freestyle. In his final event for the championships Sam won gold in the 1500m freestyle.
At the 2021 Australian Age Group Championships, Sam walked away with 4 gold medals including the 200m, 400m, 800m & 1500m freestyle events.
