My name is Harriet Hudson and I am an Australian Rower. I recently competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games where I won a Bronze medal in the Womens Quadruple Sculls.
Our story is one of rags to riches. In 2020 I battled a number of injuries and had to sit out of the 2020 Olympic selection regatta. Covid-19 was a blessing in disguise for me. The postponement of the Games meant that I was able to take the time to rehab properly and come back stronger in 2021. I was selected in the Womens Quad scull. We were the lowest priority boat and had to travel to Switzerland in May to compete in the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta, for a top 2 position. Fortunately, we were successful.
Following our trip we spent 14 days in hotel quarantine training by ourselves for the Olympics. During our Olympic regatta we experienced many highs and lows, we didn’t have a good heat and came 5th in that race. We were able to turn it around through our belief as a team and ended up winning our repechage race and winning a bronze medal in the final.
I am really passionate about public speaking and being able to share my story. There are many takeaways from my experience; the importance of a strong harmonious team, that it is never over until it’s over, no matter how close you are to a final you can always improve and that you should never rise up to an occasion but rather fall back on your training.
