Gretel Bueta has recently been voted the Worlds Best netballer for 2022, after winning the Commonwealth Games Gold Medal with the Australian Diamonds Team in Birmingham in August 2022. Bueta is now pregnant with her second son due in August 2023. She stamped her authority in Australian Netball as one of the great innovators, which is highlighted by her trademark lay-up shot. Her distinguishable look and playing flair contribute to her popularity and marketability.
The Firebirds and Diamonds star had a scintillating season, validated by her selection and dominance in the Australian Diamonds World Cup, Constellation Cup and Quad Series, scoring 267 goals for the Diamonds at 95 per cent accuracy.
Celebrating her stellar year, Gretel was awarded Australian Netball’s highest individual honour, the coveted Liz Ellis Diamond Award, along with International Player of the Year and being named the Goal Attack in the Suncorp Super Netball Team of the Year. In 2020 Gretel will be taking a break from netball whilst pregnant with her first child (with plans to return to the game in 2021).
Prior to her netball career taking off at the age of 19, Gretel played in three Basketball junior World Championships (2009- 2011). She also played for the Australian Institute of Sport in the Women’s National Basketball League during the 2010/11 season.
Gretel is an athlete of significant versatility and skill, which is underpinned by an easy going and warm personality. Off the court, Gretel enjoys working with her partners Suncorp, Nissan Australia and Nike. She is passionate about heath and nutrition having recently completed her Nutrition and Dietetics Degree at Griffith University. A beach girl at heart, she is “happiest when out in nature” or spending time with her husband Niko and their newborn, Bobby (born Jan 2021) .
Bueta has run various school and club coaching sessions for young athletes. She is an incredibly influential personality for young netball players, inspiring them as well as teaching them valuable skills within the sport and having and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As a mother she is nurturing and has the ability to be inclusive and encouraging with children, making her a great guest speaker for school or club events.
