Video Shout-Out from Janelle Cuthbertson

Janelle Cuthbertson, Captain of the Port Adelaide AFLW team has a unique experience as both a high-level competitor across two sports and a seasoned professional, leader and administrator with a deep understanding of sports from the inside out and what it takes to perform at the top. 

With no shortage of adversity over the years Janelle brings a wealth of knowledge on developing courage, resilience and leadership, and a proven track record of dedication, and a passion for excellence to any team or project.

With a background as a former international tennis player (ranked just outside of the top 100 in the world) and was living her dream rubbing shoulders with her childhood idols such as Serena Williams.

Until one day she woke up unable to feel her left leg, leaving her in a crossroads. Janelle was diagnosed with a chronic illness that affects the central nervous system. Janelle showed strength and resilience to continue to pursue her tennis career whilst navigating this health condition until she made the heartbreaking decision to retire at 22 and focus on her health and studies.

Whilst taking a break from playing high-level sport, Janelle immersed herself into the industry as an administrator within the Sporting Industry spanning across the last 12 years including a senior management role in Local Government. 

In 2019, Janelle sought a new challenge in football playing just 5 games in the WAFLW before being drafted to Fremantle Football Club in the AFLW. After just two seasons, Janelle was then an All Australian. 

After 4 seasons with Fremantle, Janelle made the move to South Australia to join Port Adelaide Football club where after only 12 weeks in the program was voted in by her peers as Co-Vice Captain. Janelle, now in her second season with Port Adelaide Football club is the Captain of the AFLW team.
