The Top 12 Most Unique (and Weird) Athlete Promotions

Australian sports stars are often invited to be part of interesting, unique and downright weird appearances, events and campaigns. While marketing deals, ambassador roles, guest speaking and skills clinics are more typical Pickstar opportunities, clients of all kinds are using the marketplace to create their own special experiences. Here’s 12 of our favourites (and remember, it is free to create your own sports star request with Pickstar).

12. Staff send-off with a cricket twist

A valued staff member at marketing agency KWP! was going on leave to get married and honeymoon, and his colleagues wanted to send him off in style. He’s a mad cricket fan, so KWP! contacted Pickstar for some help. We organised for Australian cricketer Callum Ferguson to come by the office for a hit of cricket. That’s taking office sports to a new level!

11. Brownlow Medallist's Twitter takeover

Sportsbet does cheeky, humorous social media content better than anyone. Australia’s largest corporate bookmaker contacted us to book AFL Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney, asking him to ‘live tweet’ throughout the match between the Bulldogs and the Bombers, his former clubs. The results were hilarious.

10. King of the kids at basketball birthday party

Pickstar was contacted by a Mum who was putting on a basketball birthday party for her son, and wanted to bring in an expert to show the kids some skills. So we sent Jeromie Hill from the Sydney Kings down to the local Bondi courts to shoot hoops with party goers … and he made the birthday boy’s day.

9. Carlton players as wedding guests

We all know sport brings people together, but one couple in particular shared a love for the Carlton Blues that went to a level unmatched by most fans. With this in mind, there was no better way to formalise their love and commitment to each other (and their club) than tying the knot in front of family, friends... and a selection of Carlton stars.

8. Eagle flies in for 10th birthday celebration

What birthday present do you get a young Eagles fan who has all the merch, the tickets, the autographs and everything else? You send along his favourite player to the birthday party, of course! Through Pickstar, Zach's parents requested West Coast star Andrew Gaff to attend their son's party, much to the delight of Zach and his family. Best. Present. Ever!

7. A 30th birthday to remember for an NRL fan

It’s not just the kids who get to have all the fun. A wife wanted to make her husband’s 30th birthday particularly special, so she contacted Pickstar hoping to bring a star from her husband's beloved Parramatta Eagles to attend the event. Pickstar booked the client’s favourite player, Kenny Edwards, who joined guests on the night. Kenny’s appearance exceeded expectations, and both he and the clients had a ball!

6. Coffee with a Cats star

Most people wouldn’t believe that spending one on one time with your favourite athlete, a superstar of the AFL, would be possible. But through Pickstar, one young man got to sit down for a coffee and chat with Geelong champion Joel Selwood. What an experience!

5. Lunch for a VIP client

Rolex wanted to give one of its top clients a VIP experience, and contacted Pickstar to arrange a lunch with his favourite Rugby Union star, Matt Hodgson. It was a truly unique reward for a high net worth individual.

4. AFL player attends fantasy league season launch

Fantasy sports are a phenomenon globally and the quest for bragging rights among mates knows no bounds. Pickstar client Erin named her fantasy league after former Dockers’ player Lee Spurr, so she thought why not bring the man himself along to the season launch?

3. Soccer star attends Bar Mitzvah

Much like weddings and birthday parties, Bar Mitzvah events are a big occasion within the Jewish community. Our client created a memorable Bar Mitzvah experience for one young man by inviting along his favourite A-League player at the time, then Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas, through Pickstar. L'chaim!

2. AFL legend removes Premiership tattoo

Pickstar client Silk Laser Clinics wanted to know if any athletes wanted to get a tattoo removed. When Pickstar put the question out to its network of 2000+ sports stars, the client couldn’t believe their luck when Port Adelaide legend Kane Cornes wanted to get rid of his Premiership tattoo. As you can imagine, it was a PR coup and a top story in the news, leading the clinic to be booked out for three months.

1. Footy legend reads best man’s wedding speech

Stephen contacted Pickstar with an unusual request. He was best man at his mate’s wedding, and was “sh*t scared” (his words) about doing the speech. Also, his mate is a massive Bombers fan. Could we find an Essendon player to read the speech on video for him to play at the wedding? We put the opportunity to club legend Matthew Lloyd, who said “no worries”, and was happy to help out. Lloyd's speech (scripted by Stephen) had the wedding guests in stitches, and Stephen couldn’t have been happier. He said: “Can't thank your team enough. You have come through with something I didn't think could happen. You can now join Matthew Lloyd as legends!
