A Catalyst for Change: Dr James Muecke

Dr James Muecke’s career is a story of selflessness, resilience and adaptability.

The 2020 Australian of the Year has dedicated his life to fighting preventable blindness and this journey has taken him through civil war zones, two bouts of malaria and a premature end to his days of being a surgeon.

But rather than defeating him, he told Matthew Pavlich on Chats with Pav, these setbacks are the reason for his success today.

“Keeping a cool head, maintaining a positive approach and drawing on innovation is what will help you get through tough times,” Dr Muecke said.

Back in his hometown of Adelaide after decades abroad in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, Dr Muecke is using his platform as Australian of the Year to lead the fight against preventable diabetes.
