The first Next Generation Academy player taken by Richmond, the Bendigo Pioneer also spent time in 2017 playing for Richmond’s VFL side. From Mildura, a traditional Richmond FC zone, Smith is a classy half back who uses the ball well.
Derek's first season with the Tigers was interrupted by a lower leg stress fracture in the pre season. This led to him missing up until the latter parts of the season, and he returned to play four games with Richmond's VFL side.
2019 would see Derek have somewhat of a breakout year. After impressing at VFL level, he would go on to debut in round 16 at AFL level and play one more game that season.
Derek was named as one of the best players on ground in Richmond's VFL grand final victory in 2019, the club's first premiership at that level since 1997.
After spending 2021 out of the AFL system. Derek was signed by Richmond in 2022 pre-season supplementary period.
