A Pathway to Mastery and Meaning

Troy Simmonds works at the intersection of leadership, human development, performance and the question of who we are becoming.

Drawing on a career in elite AFL, more than a decade in martial arts, and years spent working closely with executives, athletes, boys and young men, Troy explores a different story of leadership. One built not simply on achievement, but on presence, responsibility, self-awareness and the capacity to remain steady when things become difficult.

His work has particular resonance with schools, sporting communities, fathers and sons, and organisations interested in developing better leaders and better human beings.

For boys and young men, Troy explores what it means to grow into adulthood with strength and sensitivity, courage and humility, independence and responsibility. Rather than simply telling young people who they should become, his work asks a deeper question: what are the environments, relationships and practices that allow them to discover this for themselves?

For fathers, parents, coaches and educators, this opens an equally important conversation about the role adults play in that process, when to guide, when to challenge, when to protect and, perhaps most importantly, when to step back.

In business and leadership settings, these same principles take on another form. There is an offstage story of leadership: a quieter tale about calm authority and graceful composure. About the leader who can pause amidst the chaos, step back from the noise and look inward. The leader with enough self-awareness to recognise that sometimes the greatest battle is within themselves.

Troy calls this The Call to Step Back.

It begins with a simple idea: leadership is not just what you do; it is who you are. To lead others well, you must first learn to lead yourself.

Movement is central to Troy’s work, not simply as physical effort, but as a way of understanding ourselves. How we breathe, move, respond to pressure, occupy space and relate to others can reveal something about our clarity, intent and state of being. Movement becomes a mirror for growth, and performance becomes a pathway to greater self-awareness.

With a foundation in elite AFL and experience spanning martial arts, sprint training, rehabilitative methods and diverse movement disciplines, Troy brings these worlds together in a highly experiential approach to development. His work moves beyond conventional ideas of motivation and performance to explore character, belonging, responsibility, relationships and the practices through which people genuinely change.

Whether speaking with a room of fathers and their children, young athletes finding their way into adulthood, or senior leaders responsible for organisations and people, the underlying question remains the same:

Who are you practising becoming?

At the heart of Troy’s work is a simple belief: we are meant to become more than we were.

Not through pressure or perfection, but through practice, honest reflection, meaningful challenge and the courage to see ourselves clearly.
