Kathy Watt OAM rose to world-wide fame when she became Australia’s first female cycling Gold Medallist. Kathy won Gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in the Road Race, then Silver on the track in the 3km Individual Pursuit, making her the first ever Australian – female or male – to win two individual cycling medals at the same Olympics. No-one else has ever won Olympic medals on both road and track. Her performance made Australian history and inspired the nation.

Prior to Kathy’s break-through win, women’s cycling had a low national profile and minimal support. Her two Olympic medals were the highlight of a 25 -year international career, which encompassed two Olympic Games,World Championship campaigns & World Tour events , and four Commonwealth Games – winning another four Gold medals, 2 Silver & Bronze. Kathy's contribution to cycling has been recognised with an Australian Female Olympic Award, Order of Australia Medal, and induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and Victorian Cycling Hall of Fame. In March 2019, on International Women’s Day, Kathy will be inducted to the Victorian Honour Roll of Women.
In 1988, the Women’s Tour de France was held in conjunction with the Men’s race and in her first major International Tour, Kathy placed 7th overall.
