Kane Cornes grew up in a football-loving household in South Australia. With his father Graham being a former SANFL star, AFL coach and now a media personality on Channel 7, Kane was introduced to the game at a young age. He started playing for Glenelg in the SANFL growing up, eventually leading to his AFL debut with Port Adelaide in 2001.
Since retiring from the game, Kane began working for the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service and returned to the SANFL as a part time development coach for Glenelg.
AFL Debut and Achievements
Kane played for Port Adelaide from his debut in 2001 until 2015, playing a total of 300 games. His first game was against Hawthorn in Round 10 2001. Over the course of his first year, Kane proved his abilities as a midfielder, with 81 disposals.
A few years after his debut, Kane was part of the team that won the 2004 AFL Premiership, which was their first in the AFL.
Over Kane’s career, he won a number of awards, including the John Cahill Medal (Port Adelaide’s Best and Fairest) four times - in 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2012.
In his debut year, Kane won Best First Year Player, as well as Most Improved Player in 2004.
Kane Cornes also became part of the All Australian team twice in 2005 and 2007, which at the time consisted mostly of Geelong players. Kane was the only Port Adelaide player to make the All Australian team in 2005. In 2007’s Brownlow Medal Awards, Kane received the highest number of votes for the Port Adelaide team. With outstanding resilience, Kane played 174 consecutive games before missing a game in 2011.
In 2015, Kane only played the first games of the season before being rested in round three. Kane returned to playing for three more games, announcing that the round 8 game against Richmond would be his last, taking his total number of games played to 300.
Mental Health Awareness
In 2020, Kane Cornes discussed the effects of mental health as a result of the COVID pandemic on the AFL Sunday Footy Show, particularly mentioning its impact on athletes and AFL players. Due to COVID’s impact on the 2020 AFL schedule, Kane highlighted that players are stuck at home rather than preparing for their next game.
Kane raised his concerns for the players’ mental health over the pandemic, recommending that the league should be checking in on players that have lost their life’s usual structure and may not be coping with the changes in routine.
Media Career
After retiring from football, Kane Cornes has joined The Sunday Footy Show as well as 1116 SEN radio. Kane has written a number of opinion articles for The Advertiser, writing on the current state of the AFL, particularly for the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide football teams.
