Jake Doran officially became Australia’s newest track sensation when he set the U20 100m national and Oceanian record in Jamasankoski, Finland in July 2018. Doran ran 10.15s with a legal +1.5s wind to break Jack Hale’s previous best-mark of 10.21s. That time puts Doran as the equal sixth fastest Australian male in history over the distance.

The feat was made more remarkable given the fact Doran had a terrible run of injuries in the 12 months preceding that run. Two lumbar stress fractures cruelled the Townsville sprinter’s 2017/18 domestic season and ruled him out of the 2018 Commonwealth Games trials and the Australian Junior National Championships.

Jake is one of the most exciting prospects in a very promising period for Australian athletics. Male sprinters typically don’t peak until they are between 23 and 30 years of age. Given Jake has done what he has an 18-year-old, his coach, two-time Olympian and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Paul Di Bella is extremely optimistic about Doran’s potential to challenge the best sprinters in the world. Recently, Jake Doran was awarded the 2019 Male Athlete of the Year for Athletics North Queensland.
