Mairéad Seoighe is a Gaelic football star from County Galway, Ireland and was selected as a rookie by the North Melbourne Kangaroos in 2019.
Her talent was spotted by the AFLW recruits during the CrossCoders trial camp, which was ran in May in Ireland. She graduated from the CrossCoders programme , which was a global initiative to give athletes from sports across the globe the opportunity to play AFLW. She took a big step by deciding to move from Ireland to pursue a career in AFLW with the North Melbourne Kangaroos.
Mairéad made her AFL debut in the Harvey Norman Premiership in Ireland in winter 2018 with the West Clare Waes. Mairéad won the golden boot, finishing the tournament on 22 goals and was part of the team who won the premiership final. Mairéad was also named as captain on the Team of the Tournament.
In Ireland Mairéad also plays Gaelic football at the highest level for County Galway, who play at the top level in both league and championship. Galway have been Connacht champions for the last 3 years in a row while Mairéad has been playing with them. Mairéad has represented her universities NUIG and Mary Immaculate College at the highest level.
As well as Gaelic football , Mairéad has played soccer at University Level and won an all Ireland medal with her college NUIG in 2013. Mairéad has 3 world medals and a North American Championship medal to her name for Irish dancing in her younger years.
Mairéad is hoping to bring her love of team sports, experience and strengths from these to the AFLW for the upcoming season ahead.
Outside of sport, Mairéad graduated from a Masters programme as a Primary School Teacher in May 2016 and enjoys all things health, wellness and fitness. Mairéad has experience in coaching children in a wide variety of summer programmes and from her experiences in schools to date.
