“Uncertainty forces us to adapt. When we get creative with how we adapt, we create unexpected opportunities'”

Murphy grew up a passionate swimmer in Canberra until she left the sport before commencing university. In 2014, Murphy fell 20m from a fifth story balcony which left her in a coma. Unfortunately, Murphy’s injuries were too severe for recovery, which led to the amputation of her right leg below the knee. Using hydrotherapy as a recovery tool, her love for swimming reignited and just one year later was named on the Australian Dolphins Para Swim Team ahead of the 2015 World Championships. 900 days after her accident Monique Murphy won a silver medal in the S10 400m Freestyle at the Rio Paralympic Games. She has represented Australia apart of 5 consecutive Australian Swim Teams where she held the short course 400m free World Record for 5 years and won multiple National and International medals. Monique was also elected Team leader from 2017-2012.

Monique embraces the term 'adaptive excellence' reminding audiences that by becoming comfortable in uncertainty and getting creative opens up new opportunities. This is embodied by her 'mermaid fin' a training tool allowing Monique to train and make the most of her new ability.

Monique has a bachelor of Business and works as a casual associate at PwC, is an education presenter visiting schools and sports teams for Sport Integrity Australia and Paralympic Australia. She was also elected Para head of program for the Lifeline Community Custodians, a partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport where she fought to reduce the stigma of Mental Illness. Monique is also a Qendo ambassador, raising awareness for people with endometriosis, after her difficult journey to her own diagnosis.
