Career Highlights
2008 was a breakout year for Bassett as she was not only an automatic selection for the West Coast Fever, she was called upon for the Diamonds’ against England. 2009 saw further success for Bassett as she was selected to play in the World Cup Youth team.
In 2011, Bassett finished the year in the ANZ Championship as the leading goal shooter, which helped her establish a prominent role in the Diamonds’ squad. Despite being a key role in the squad, Caitlin mainly played as a substitute, however, was edging closer to the starting-seven. That year during the World Championships, Caitlin played in the side as a ‘super-sub’ and amazingly scored the winning goal in the last second of the final to win her side the gold medal.
The beginning of the 2013 season saw the withdrawal of Catherine Cox from the Diamonds providing Bassett an opportunity that she seized immediately. After establishing herself in the Diamonds, Bassett played a remarkable tournament during the 2014 Commonwealth Games that helped contribute to the side’s gold medal. Her stellar form in 2014 resulted in being short-listed for the Liz Ellis Diamond award.
However, 2015 was the year of Caitlin Bassett. Along with the Diamonds, Bassett won her second World Championship and in the tournament's wake, was awarded the Liz Ellis Diamond Player of the Year. However, perhaps Caitlin’s greatest career accolade was being recognised as the World’s Best Netballer in 2015.
In 2017 Caitlin moved from Perth to the Sunshine Coast to play for the newly formed Lightning as part of the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball league where she led the team to the Premiership.
She competed at her 2nd Commonwealth Games in 2018 in front of her new home state of Queensland where she captained the Diamonds to a hard fought Grand Final against the England Roses, which the Aussies lost in a heartbreaking after-buzzer thriller. In 2018 it was further announced that Caitlin had been signed to the Sydney Giants.
At the beginning of 2019, Caitlin moved to the GIANTS on a three year deal where the team just narrowly missed out on finals by percentage. She also captained the Diamonds in the 2019 World Cup and was instrumental to Australia’s silver medal after just losing in the final to New Zealand. Caitlin is excited for the upcoming 2020 season with the GIANTS as they look to challenge for their first ever premiership and build on the 2019 season.
