Jamie was drafted during the 2009 NAB AFL Draft by the North Melbourne Football Club. Jamie’s football is a product of both Scotch College in the APS and the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC CUP.
Macmillan entered the club ahead of the 2010 season and was praised for showing great leadership and maturity early on in his career. Over his first two years at the club, he played in 13 games, showing signs as a future defender.
Jamie’s breakout came over the 2012 and 2013 seasons where he began to collect the ball more frequently and create link-up plays from the half-back line. His execution by hand and foot was highly impressive as was his poise and composer under pressure and in traffic. Jamie averaged an impressive 16.2 disposals over these two years.
Ahead of the 2014 season, Jamie was recognised for his ongoing leadership and was announced into the senior leadership group. In only his 4th season at the club, Jamie’s natural leadership evolved as his professionalism and natural mentoring became infectious in the playing group. He was consequently elevated to the senior ranks. However, unfortunately Jamie spent little of his time on the field, his first year of being an acknowledged leader at the club was marred by ongoing injury that plagued the defender’s year.
However, true to his testament and character, Macmillan bounced back in positive fashion and returned in 2015 with some consistent football. In his 17 appearances, he averaged over 19 disposals and showed signs of continued development as a medium, rebound defender. Furthermore, Jamie’s best year to date came in the 2016 season where averaged 18 disposals, 2 tackles and 3.3 rebounds a game. His year was highlighted in the Kangaroo’s Round 22 clash with Sydney where he collected 31 disposals and 9 rebounds.
Jamie sadly missed a large part of the 2017 season due to injury. Despite this, North have signed Macmillan until the conclusion of the 2020 season.
After retiring from the game Jamie has taken up the role as Head of strategic Operations & Projects at the North Melbourne Football Club.
