About me

Nicky Winmar is a former Australian rules footballer who made a significant impact both on and off the field. Born on September 25, 1965, in Western Australia, Winmar is of Indigenous Australian descent, belonging to the Noongar people.

He played for St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) from 1987 to 1998, establishing himself as a talented and influential player known for his agility, skill, and courage. Winmar is perhaps best remembered for his iconic gesture during a match against Collingwood in 1993 when he lifted his jersey and pointed to his skin in response to racist abuse from the crowd, a powerful moment that sparked conversations about racism in Australian sport.

Beyond his playing career, Winmar's stance against racism has left a lasting legacy, inspiring others and contributing to the ongoing dialogue about equality and inclusion in sport and society.
