Create an experience with Annie Louey

Annie Louey is an award-winning and multi-talented comedian and presenter who moves seamlessly between television, radio and stage. With a strong background in stand-up comedy as well as journalism, Annie has mastered the art of being serious one minute and funny the next.

She has hosted two seasons of China Tonight on ABC TV, is a regular guest on ABC News Breakfast, and she was the host of Rediscover Victoria, a travel program now living on SBS On Demand. Her quick wit and cheeky charm has made her a popular choice for guest spots on shows like The Cheap Seats (Channel 10), The Weekly (ABC TV) and on radio programs across the country.

In January 2024, Annie launched a new sketch series on YouTube called I’m So Sorry for Your Loss. The project was funded by the ABC and Screen Australia’s ‘Fresh Blood’ initiative for promising comedy creators. The program helped to launch the careers of comedians like Aunty Donna – who Annie has also worked closely with in the past, on shows like Aunty Donna’s Coffee Café.

Although she is used to talking about her personal life on stage, audiences got to know Annie on a much deeper level when documentary program Australian Story (ABC TV) made her the subject of an episode in 2023. Having survived a campfire accident at 16, Annie developed a fearless attitude towards life. In the months she took off school, she watched every stand-up DVD available at her local Blockbuster before deciding to enter the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Class Clowns competition. Annie made it to the National Final in 2011, where she performed on stage at the Melbourne Town Hall. Much to the disdain of her Chinese parents, Annie was officially hooked on comedy.

Eventually, the risk would pay off as that same kid went on to perform as an adult (twice) at the Comedy Festival’s Opening Night Allstars Supershow at the Palais Theatre, to over 3000 people. She toured with the Comedy Festival’s Roadshow and she even won the prestigious Moosehead Award in 2021 for her show Annie Louey is Flirting with Death.

As part of the marketing for that show, Annie created an original webseries From the Hearse’s Mouth, which was selected for the Sydney Web Festival. The six-part series saw her interviewing comedians, like Dane Simpson and Claire Hooper, about life and death while driving a vintage hearse.

To date, Annie has created five solo shows, and she is performing again at this year’s Comedy Festival, at the Melbourne Town Hall. The split bill show Too Haram to Handle will see her sharing stage time with her partner, and international act, Mohammed Magdi.

As a writer, Annie has worked on the final season of Rosehaven (ABC TV and Amazon Prime). In 2022, she was one of six writers invited to participate in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s First Stage program. The program culminated in a professional reading of Annie’s original, theatrical work.

As if she’s not busy enough, Annie also moonlights as a wedding celebrant and has married over 30 couples and counting.
