Elijah Winnington, born on the Gold Coast and currently residing in Brisbane, is one of the world’s premier freestyle swimmers.
Under the guidance of his coach Dean Boxall, Elijah trains alongside fellow Olympic champions Ariane Titmus and Mollie O’Callaghan.
In his debut on the senior Dolphins team, Elijah was a member of the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay team that won gold and set a new Games Record at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The hometown hero continued his rapid ascent by winning gold in the 400m freestyle at the 2019 and 2021 Australian Swimming Championships.
An impressive qualifier for Tokyo, he entered the competition ranked #1 in the world but in the final he finished which made him question coming back to the sport altogether.
After months of soul searching and questioning whether he could return to competition, Elijah embarked on an incredible three-year journey towards the next Olympic Games in Paris where he picked up numerous world medals.
Beginning in 2022, his comeback included winning gold in the 400m Men’s Freestyle at the World Championships in Budapest, followed by three more gold medals (one individual and two team) at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. In 2023, Elijah went back to the World Championships, this time in Fukuoka, and claimed an incredible silver medal in the event. Everything was looking great leading into an Olympic year!
At the start of 2024, he won silver in both the 400m and 800m freestyle at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, before securing a silver medal in the 400m freestyle at the Paris Olympics, achieving redemption from Tokyo.
