Gemma Houghton is an Australian Rules footballer playing for the Port Adelaide Football Club in the AFL Women's competition. Houghton was recruited by Fremantle as a free agent in October 2016.
Gemma had her first big season in 2019 kicking nine goals to be the club's leading goalkicker. Her athleticism and strong marking was recognised with selection in the 2019 AFL Women's All-Australian team and finished third in Fremantle’s best and fairest. She was a constant threat up forward, with her pace and contested marking ability making her a tough match-up for any defender. She also proved her versatility by pitching in as a second ruck option.
The strong and mobile star forward played every game in 2020 earning All-Australian team selection for the second straight season and finished fourth in the club's best and fairest.
In 2021, Houghton had a breakout season finishing with 15 goals to be the club’s leading goalkicker which was also equal second overall for the entire AFLW league’s goal kicking tally for the season. She was named the AFLW MVP for both Round 1 and Round 6.
She polled 8 votes overall in the W Awards Best and Fairest, second highest for a forward in the league for 2021.
Houghton was named the IEBF Female Sports Ambassador of the Year for 2021.
Houghton has strong leadership qualities and her character and attitude is of a high standard which makes her a standout role model to the younger generation.
On 10th of May, 2022, Houghton signed with expansion club Port Adelaide for AFLW Season 7.
The star forward had a career best season in 2023, kicking 16 goals to be Port Adelaide's leading goalkicker. She earned selection in the 2023 All-Australian squad and a runner-up finish in the club's best and fairest. She has big plans to elevate to new levels in 2024 and beyond.
