Kathleen O'Kelly-Kennedy is a powerhouse Australian Paralympian, international athlete, and dedicated community advocate whose career spans over two decades at the highest levels of sport and international diplomacy. A Beijing 2008 Paralympic Bronze Medallist in wheelchair basketball, Kathleen has transitioned across multiple disciplines - including professional European basketball and international sprint kayaking - while championing systemic inclusion for people with disabilities. With nearly 20 years of experience as a professional speaker and mentor, Kathleen delivers high-impact presentations on resilience, high performance, and the profound power of raising expectations to unlock human potential.

Career Highlights

Kathleen’s athletic and professional achievements cross multiple sports and international platforms:

  • Paralympic & International Basketball: A long-time representative for the Australian Women’s National Basketball team, Kathleen won a Bronze Medal at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games and competed at the 2006 and 2014 World Championships. She became only the second Australian woman to play wheelchair basketball professionally in Europe, competing in Italy and Germany.
  • Collegiate Success: Attending the University of Illinois on a sports scholarship, she won three consecutive US National Championships and was named the Academic Student Athlete of the Year (2006/07).
  • Dual-Sport Elite Performance: Following her retirement from basketball in 2016, Kathleen transitioned to Para-Canoe. She secured a scholarship with the Western Australian Institute of Sport (2019–2024), becoming the 2022–2024 National Champion in the Women’s KL3 200m and 500m sprints, and achieved a peak world ranking of 9th at the 2022 ICF Sprint Canoe World Championships.
  • Global Advocacy & Leadership: In 2016, Kathleen served as an Australian Delegate to the United Nations in New York for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, participating as a panelist on sustainable and inclusive development. She is also the Co-founder of the Red Dust Heelers program, an initiative utilizing wheelchair basketball to drive disability awareness and inclusion within Aboriginal and other communities across Australia.

Advocacy & Impact

Following a distinguished chapter in elite sport, Kathleen now channels her lived experience into advocating for improved pathways and support systems for people with disabilities. She focuses heavily on addressing the distinct barriers faced by young women with disabilities in sport and broader society.

Driven by a deep commitment to community, Kathleen also spent several years serving as a foster carer for three young people in out-of-home care - an experience she notes as one of the most rewarding and formative chapters of her life away from competitive sport.

Speaking Relevance

Kathleen is a highly adaptable speaker who uses humour, candour, and authentic storytelling to bridge social barriers. She has a unique ability to connect with diverse audiences, from corporate executives to school groups, challenging them to re-evaluate the boundaries they place on themselves and others.

Her presentations are built around her framework of WIN (What’s Important Now?), teaching audiences how to reset after setbacks and focus on the connections that empower daily growth.

Key Speaking Topics:

  • Raising the Bar: Overcoming the low expectations often placed on - or adopted by - individuals, and how to dream bigger to reach true potential.
  • The Reality of High Performance: What it means to go "all in" toward a goal without guarantees, navigating failure, and building genuine resilience.
  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Practical insights into inclusion in action, intersectional barriers for women in sport, and breaking down social stigma.
  • Embracing Difference: Navigating body image, self-esteem, and the balance between intense dedication and a well-rounded life.

Endorsements

Kathleen well and truly completed everything that was outlined in my booking request and completely exceeded my expectations. Kathleen gave an incredible and inspiring speech on the topic of equality – from her perspective as a woman, and as a woman with a disability. The floor was then opened to questions, most of which were largely focused on Kathleen’s personal story, but she was more than happy to share. Kathleen was so personable and had a great, warm energy about her (and even stayed to socialise over morning tea!). It was an absolute pleasure having her as our keynote speaker!
