Hailing from Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, Cameron Mooney (more famously known as Moons) made the move to Victoria to begin his AFL career after being selected by the North Melbourne Football Club in the 1996 Draft at the ripe age of Seventeen.
Three years later, Moons made his AFL debut in round 7 when the Kangaroos took on the reigning premiers, the Adelaide Crows. Standing at 1.95 metres tall, Moons made himself a permanent fixture in the North Melbourne forward line from this point on and would go on to be a part of the 1999 Premiership winning side, when North Melbourne defeated Carlton.
At the conclusion of this season, Cam was part of a blockbuster trade that saw him head down the coast to his new home at the Geelong Football Club.
Mooney debuted for the club in 2004; however it was in 2005 after some setbacks with injury that he truly blossomed in the side. A standout performance in the 2005 elimination final against Melbourne helped carry the Cats to a Semi-Final berth against Sydney Swans, sadly resulting in a nail-biting loss.
Fast forward to 2007, Cam had now cemented himself in Geelong’s forward line and it was only up from here. A standout season with Geelong finishing top of the ladder, Mooney finished the season as the club’s leading goal kicker, it was in this same year that Mooney was awarded with his first All Australian selection. The cherry on top came when Geelong claimed the 2007 Premiership, defeating Port Adelaide.
Mooney’s stellar formed continued through the following years with another Grand Final appearance in 2008, ending in a heartbreaking loss. Heartbreak however turned to triumph in 2009 when Mooney claimed his third and final premiership medal.
In 2011 after 221 games Mooney announced his retirement, being remembered as a passionate and fiery forward who always wore his heart on his sleeve.
Mooney’s post-playing career continues to flourish – from part time Coaching roles at the Western Bulldogs, to corporate roles at the Geelong Football club – it is in the media where Mooney makes regular appearances on our TV screens, radios and even the papers. A member of the Fox Footy family, featuring on shows such as AFL 360, The Bounce and Game Day coverage, Mooney also regularly appears on Geelong’s local radio station K-Rock and writes for the Geelong Advertiser Newspaper. A father of four, Cam is very well grounded and grateful for the opportunities he has been able to create for himself via the footy world. A relaxed and much loved all rounder, Cam is a great public speaker and brand ambassador.
