Another big name to come out of South Australia, Newley quickly established himself as a star of the NBL and international scene as a teenager. At 17 Newley was a world champion as part of the Australian team that claimed the gold medal at the 2003 FIBA Junior Men’s World Championship.

After a two-year stay at the AIS, Newley joined the Townsville Crocodiles where he became a household name overnight, winning the NBL Rookie of the Year and Best Sixth-Man award in his first season.

NBL stardom suited the 199cm swingman, becoming one of the most potent offensive forces in the league, averaging in excess of 22 points per game in his final season with the Crocs.

In was at this time that Newley was thrust into the national team spotlight, first helping the Australian Boomers with the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medal before earning a spot on the roster for the 2006 FIBA World Championship.

His achievements in North Queensland and with the Boomers didn’t go unnoticed, with the Houston Rockets selecting Newley at pick 54 of the 2007 NBA Draft.

The Rockets sent Newley to Europe to further hone his game, with Greece the first stop before earning his first Olympic Games call-up, making the squad for the 2008 Beijing Games.

A regular competitor at the Euroleague level, Newley moved from Greece to Turkey ahead of the 2010 FIBA World Championship – followed by a move to Lithuania.

After an impressive first season with Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius, Newley moved to Spain mid-way through the 2011/12 season to ensure his place in the Boomers squad for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Newley settled on a move to the Canary Islands post-London, excelling for Gran Canaria in their rise up the Spanish ACB standings. Appearing the quarter finals in both the 2013/14, and 2014/15 Ligua ACB seasons, his experience proved vital during the Boomers victory in the 2015 FIBA Oceania Championship.

He then returned home for a stint with the Sydney Kings while playing the veteran role for the Boomers at their inaugural FIBA Asia Cup, where they claimed the gold medal.
