Luke Shuey is an Australian rules footballer who is the current vice-captain for the West Coast Eagles in the AFL.
Luke Shuey has primed himself in becoming one of the game’s best inside midfielders. The 28-year-old is tough, explosive, and very damaging when forward. Luke’s inside game is highly impressive with the 183cm athlete winning the ball and then disposing of it with class. His kicking and hands are elite and further, his leadership has been recognized as first-class.
Luke began his journey with the Eagles after having an outstanding U18 campaign with both the Oakleigh Chargers and Marcellin College in 2009. Luke then made his debut in 2010 where he played 6 games. 2011 was an outstanding year for Luke, playing all 25 Eagles games and averaging 20 disposals and 4 tackles a game. He also kicked an astonishing 24 goals for the season, proving his great versatility as an emerging player. Luke was awarded both the Runner-Up in the NAB AFL Rising Star as well as the Eagles Rookie of the Year in 2011. Luke’s 2012 campaign illustrated further development as the midfielder had another terrific season, averaging 23 disposals in his 21 appearances.
Luke’s ability and leadership grew over the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Despite facing some small setbacks during the 2013 season, Luke was continuing support and contributor to the Eagles’ side. Luke’s football hit a new gear at the start of the 2015 season as his performances hit new highs. 2015 saw Shuey boot 24 goals whilst averaging 23.7 disposals and 4.9 tackles a game. He bolstered this further in 2016 when he played 23 games, averaging 25.9 disposals a game as well as a huge 6.47 tackles. This was perhaps Luke’s best year as he was recognized as the club’s Best and Fairest player.
2017 was another great year for Luke as his consistency reached elite levels once again. He reached another colossal average of 26.3 disposals a game and 5.8 tackles a game. Further, Luke continued to develop in his vice-captaincy role, providing a voice and example on the field each week. A career highlight of Luke’s came at the conclusion of the 2017 season where he kicked the winning goal after the siren in the first elimination final against Port Adelaide. Shuey will now look towards the 2018 season where he will hope to further excel the Eagles in their premiership pursuit.
