Ed Richards is a speedy halfback from the Oakleigh Chargers who was drafted by the Western Bulldogs with pick 16 in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft. Richards, who is closely related to the great Collingwood legends in Ron and Lou Richards, posses great natural attributes as an athlete and is certainly a player of the future. His speed allows him to break lines, open congested situations as well as excel on the outside of play. Richard’s composure under pressure is far beyond his years. Richards ran a 2.89-second 20m sprint in AFL Combine fitness testing – this paired with his kicking efficiency of 75% was the best out of any of the TAC Cup players invited to the National Combine.
Richards debuted in Round 2 of the 2018 season against the West Coast Eagles where he collected an impressive 11 disposals. The following week, Richards increased this number to 17, showcasing his speed and skills at an elite level in only his second game. His defensive game was also highly impressive as he committed 5 tackles for the game. Richards has assimilated very well into the AFL, he appears to be performing in an environment where he can influence and take the game on.
Ed has established himself in the dogs best 22, consistently playing through 2021 and 2022.
