Growing up just outside of Toowoomba, in the town of Allora, Matthew Denny started out his throwing career in year 1, throwing bean bags as shot puts and vortexes as javelins. In his teen years, Denny built a homemade discus circle at his family’s property. Fast forward to 2013, he won the World Under 18 Youth Championships discus title, placed fourth at the 2014 Under 20 World Junior Championships and won silver at the 2015 Summer Universiade. In 2015, Denny became the second athlete in the near 100-year-history to win both the discus and hammer titles at the 2016 Nationals. Denny has represented Australia in the discus at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics where he was the youngest in the field at the age of 20.
His personal best in the discus is 67.02 metres set in the Tokyo Olympics this year!
In 2022, Denny attended the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, competing in the Men’s Discus Throw, where he was able to win first place and bring home a gold medal.
